Understanding NDIS Funding

Understanding NDIS Funding
What is NDIS Funding?

The NDIS provides funds to help people with disabilities live like other members of society and achieve their life goals. Participants pay for supports and services from the budget individually allocated to them.

NDIS Funding Categories

Supports and services for participants fall into three categories: core, capital and capacity building.

Core Funding

Pays for support to help complete daily living activities

Capital Funding

Pays for support to acquire assistive technologies, equipment, home or vehicle modifications, and other capital costs.

Capacity building funding

Pays for supports to help participants learn new skills, build resilience and improve confidence

What specific supports are funded?

The types of supports that the NDIS may fund for participants include:

  • daily personal activities
  • transportation to enable participation in the community, social, economic and daily life activities
  • successful transition to the workplace, employment preparation or finding and keeping a job
  • therapeutic supports, including behaviour support
  • assistance with household tasks to enable participants to maintain a healthy home environment
  • professional assistance for participants in need of equipment assessment, set up and training
  • home modification design and construction
  • mobility equipment, and
  • vehicle modifications.

It is important to know that some of the supports that you require will not be funded by the NDIS. The NDIS cannot fund support that is:

  • not related to a person's disability
  • the responsibility of another government system or community service
  • related to daily living expenses that are not included in the participant's support needs as outlined in the NDIS Plan, or
  • is likely to cause harm to the participant or pose a risk to others.
